Thursday Night – Old Time Radio

Thursday Night – Old Time Radio with Presenter, Matt Cox

This week on Cruising the Classics, we haven’t forgotten it’s October, nor have we forgotten the holiday at the end of the month. Therefore we present two works to hopefully thrill you and if they chill you  bit we hope you still enjoy them.  This week we dive head first in to HP Lovecraft with two short stories..  We start with Rats In the Walls which was first published in Weird Tales Magazine in 1924 but we’re going to listen to the Black Mass from July 3 1964.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Black Mass it was produced in Berkley and very well done.  Then we swithch to more familiar territory as we look at Suspense from November 1 1945 and listen to The Dunwich Horror starring Ronald Coleman.  It’s from AFRS so while it misses the commercials it’s still well calculated to … well you know the rest.  Dunwich Horror was also published in Weird Tales in 1929.  Enjoy these mmodern more pulp classics.

Thanks so much

Dear Friends,

The shows that I shall be playing honor the advent of football. Yes, football is indeed in the air. I am going to surprise you by not naming these shows, but you will like them very much.

While Halloween isn’t until the end of next month, we don’t have to wait until then to enjoy a pair of spooky detective stories that involve ghosts and spirits of the dead.

First, we’ll listen to Johnny Dollar in the Ghost to Ghost Matter, which will be followed by an episode of Richard Diamond, Private Detective, titled The Van Dyke Séance.

Both of these shows may or may not leave a chill in your spine, but are guaranteed to entertain.

Tonight, we salute the great actor Howard Duff.
We begin with Duff’s first appearance as detective Sam Spade in an episode
from 07/12/46 Sam And The Guiana Sovereign Caper.
We continue with Howard Duff as the lead in Voyage Of The Scarlet Queen. He
auditioned as Philip Carney on the show of 02/02/47.
The second mate in this audition was Elliott Lewis who would later go on to
play the lead character once the show got on the air.

Mason Adams was “Pepper”, on Pepper Young’s family for 16 years.

Housewives would stop there work and gather to sit by their radios to listen to each daily episode of Pepper Young’s Family.

On Thursday evening, we’ll hear two episodes from the long running series plus an interview that Richard Lamparski did with radio veteran actors Mason Adams and Mary Jane Higby.

Also contributing was the long-time director of the program Chick Vincent.

Here we were all set to bring you a nice little operetta from  Chicago when Prairie Dog Bob bade me otherwise.  So  we’re heading to Nova Scotia instead.  Then we hoof it down to Fort Worth for a little show when cattle was king. The Baxters will be our nightcap, of course.
